NEW DELHI: A 65-year-old man allegedly involved in the 1993 Mumbai riots has been arrested 31 years after absconding, police reported on Tuesday.
Sayyad Nadir Shah Abbas Khan was arrested in the Sewri area by a team from the Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Marg police station on Monday, an official confirmed as reported by PTI.
Khan was initially named as an accused in a case of attempted murder and unlawful assembly during the riots that erupted in the city following the demolition of the Babri Masjid in December 1992.Although arrested at the time, Khan never attended court sessions after obtaining bail, the official added.
Subsequently, the court declared Khan a wanted accused and issued a non-bailable warrant against him. Despite multiple visits to his residence in Sewri, central Mumbai, he remained elusive. Investigators eventually tracked his location by scrutinizing the mobile phone records of his relatives. On June 29, officials from the Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Marg police station received a tip-off about Khan’s impending visit to his residence, leading to a successful operation to arrest him.
Khan has been re-arrested in connection with the 1993 case, and further investigation is underway, the official said.
