28 dogs were rescued from a home in Bangkok‘s Khlong Sam Wa district after they were found to have survived by consuming their owner‘s leg. The owner, 62-year-old Attapol Charoenpithak, was discovered dead on Saturday after neighbors noticed his car had not moved for several days, SCMP reported quoting local media.
The rescued dogs, a combination of Chihuahua and Shih Tzu breeds, are believed to have survived by eating Attapol’s left leg.Animal welfare groups were aware of Attapol’s tendency to keep numerous dogs and transport them in cages, which had raised concerns about their well-being.
Attapol, who had a history of hypertension and diabetes, is thought to have succumbed to these conditions, leaving the dogs trapped and without food for more than a week. Police and representatives from The Voice Foundation, an animal welfare organization, described the home as being in a state of disarray, with rubbish and dog feces scattered throughout, SCMP said.
The Voice Foundation stated on Instagram, “Initially, it was reported that there were about 15 dogs surrounding the uncle’s body. But when the team and doctors arrived to the area, they found them scattered around the house and 2 dead bodies were found.” The organization revealed that there were originally 30 dogs in the house, but two had already perished by the time rescuers arrived.

Following the rescue, the foundation released a video of the dogs at their facility, highlighting their weakened state due to a lack of food and water. The charity appealed for support on social media, stating, “The most important thing is that the foundation needs to ask for mercy to help these 28 lives. Therefore, we need to use emergency funds and raise more funds to take care of these children.”
In 2021, a veterinarian who had provided care for Attapol’s dogs contacted The Voice Foundation after several of the animals died. The organization then removed 20 dogs from his home for sterilization but returned them at Attapol’s request. He had informed the charity that they could assume responsibility for the animals after his death.
