NEW DELHI: The Union health ministry on Wednesday issued advisory to states asking them to maintain a constant vigil regarding rise in Zika virus cases in Maharashtra.
“In view of some reported cases of Zika virus from Maharashtra, Dr Atul Goel, Director General of Health Services (DGHS), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has issued an advisory to States highlighting the need for maintaining a state of constant vigil over the Zika virus situation in the country,” a press statement noted.
“As Zika is associated with microcephaly and neurological consequences in the foetus of the affected pregnant lady, States have been advised to alert the clinicians for close monitoring,” it added.
States are advised to direct health facilities in affected or nearby areas to screen pregnant women for Zika virus, monitor fetal growth in Zika-positive mothers, and adhere to Central Government guidelines. They are also instructed to appoint a nodal officer in hospitals to ensure premises remain free of Aedes mosquitoes.
