While talking to Subhash K.Jha, Mumtaz fondly remembered Rajesh Khanna not only as her favorite co-star but also as one of her most beloved colleagues in the film industry. While Rajesh Khanna often took the spotlight in their films, Mumtaz recalled moments where her roles were equally significant. She especially cherished her part in the film ‘Apna Desh’, which included the famous song ‘Duniya Mein Logon Ko Dokha Kabhi Ho Jata Hai,’ as the movie had a well-defined role for her.
Despite the deep bond they shared, their relationship faced its own set of challenges. Mumtaz offered insight into Rajesh Khanna’s passionate yet occasionally moody nature, noting that he would become upset when she chose to work with other leading men. She recalled, “The only time he’d get upset with me was when I signed films with other heroes. He would sulk in the corner. It was okay for him to work with other heroines. There are separate rules for men and women. He always treated me with affection and care. He called me ‘moti’ (fat) because I was always on the plump side. I didn’t mind.”
Still, Mumtaz highlighted that Rajesh Khanna always treated her with warmth and care, even affectionately calling her “moti” (fat) due to her naturally plump figure—a nickname she grew fond of over time.
Their professional relationship remained strong despite the occasional tension, resulting in ten box office hits, including classics like ‘Do Raaste’, ‘Saccha Jhutha’, ‘Roti’, and ‘Aap Ki Kasam’. These films showcased their chemistry and left a lasting legacy in the hearts of Bollywood fans.
