Madhu Chopra recently shared insights into the struggles her daughter Priyanka Chopra faced before winning the Miss India title in 2000, a milestone that set her on the path to global fame. In an interview with The Something Bigger Show, Madhu revealed the sacrifices her family made to support Priyanka’s ambitions, particularly highlighting the opposition they faced from her late husband’s patriarchal family.
Madhu recounted how convincing her husband, Dr. Ashok Chopra, to let Priyanka compete in the Miss India pageant was no easy task. At the time, Priyanka was in 12th grade and preparing for her board exams. Initially, Ashok was hesitant, fearing it would distract her from her studies. However, Madhu managed to persuade him, emphasizing the rarity of such an opportunity. Ashok eventually agreed, and Priyanka went on to win Miss India and later the Miss World title.
The bigger hurdle came when seeking approval from Ashok’s elder brother, the head of their family. He was strictly against Priyanka participating, believing girls in their family should not pursue such ambitions. Madhu revealed how she stood her ground, enduring emotional resistance to gain his reluctant permission. The patriarch set one condition: Madhu would have to give up her medical career and accompany Priyanka to Mumbai. Determined to support her daughter, Madhu agreed, with Ashok promising to manage their family practice in her absence.
