Arrested Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das

DHAKA: The bail plea of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das should be considered, leaders of minority religious groups in Bangladesh have told interim govt chief adviser Muhammad Yunus. The bail hearing of the monk, who is facing sedition charges, has been rescheduled to Jan 2.
“Obtaining bail is the right of all individuals,” Father Albert Rosario of St Mary’s Cathedral said after attending a dialogue hosted by Yunus with leaders of major faiths on Thursday. Noted Bangladeshi writer Farhad Mazhar also underscored the importance of Das’s right to bail.
At the meet, Sukomal Barua, chief adviser to Bangladesh Buddhist Federation, proposed hosting an international conference to showcase the nation’s commitment to peace and unity. Abinash Mitra, assistant secretary (religion) of Ramna Harichand Temple, said the Hindu community put forth its grievances and Yunus gave a patient hearing.
Meanwhile, a Chittagong court Friday placed Chandan Das and Ripan Das on remand in connection with the killing of Saiful Islam Alif, who died in clashes after a city court denied Chinmoy Das bail.
