MEERUT: UP police arrested Samajwadi Party’s Meerut city MLA from Barabanki on Monday after he failed to appear in court despite 100 non-bailable warrants being issued against him. Rafiq Ansari’s arrest comes after a recent order from the Allahabad HC which mandated his production in the trial court, reports Sandeep Rai.
Meerut SSP Rohit Singh Sajwan said, “We received a tip-off about his presence in Barabanki and our team reached the town and took him into custody. We are bringing him to Meerut and plan to produce him in court.”
On May 8, the Allahabad high court had denied relief to Ansari, who has been charged with avoiding court appearances despite the non-bailable warrants against him between 1997 and 2015. Ansari is an accused in a criminal case dating back to 1995, involving charges of rioting and mischief.
