PATNA/BUXAR/DALTONGANJ/NAGPUR: Ten people, including six women, died of suspected heatstroke over seven hours in Odisha on Thursday, 9 died in Bihar over 24 hours, and three perished in Jharkhand in the last 36 hours.
In Nagpur, at least 20 unidentified people were found dead between May 24 and 30, indicating mortality due to suspected sunstroke in heatwave-like conditions.
The Odisha deaths, all at Rourkela Govt Hospital, occurred between 1.30 pm and 8.40 pm on Thursday. The maximum day temperature in Rourkela was 44.9°C. The age group of the deceased men was 23 to 70 years, while the six dead women were aged between 30 and 69 years.
“Of the 10 patients, eight were received dead and two died during treatment. They are suspected to have died of heatstroke, but the exact cause of death will be known after post-mortem reports come in,” said RGH director Ganesh Prasad Das. The postmortems are to be conducted Friday.
In Bihar, where the maximum temperature was 47.1°C on Thursday, five of the dead were polling officers. While four deaths were reported from Bhojpur, one person each died in Buxar, Rohtas, Arwal, Begusarai, and Patna, officials said.
Bhojpur DM Mahendra Kumar said three polling personnel — Sanjay Kumar, Rajesh Ram, and Mohammed Yasin — and a home guard jawan, Hem Narayan Singh, died due to heatstrokes in Bhojpur. “It was the hottest day, and despite having medical facilities at all centres, they collapsed. One home guard became unconscious at where he was staying. He was referred to Sadar Hospital, where a dedicated team of doctors attended him. But, unfortunately, he died,” Kumar told TOI.
In Arwal, Arunachal Pradesh police constable Nikki Ahuja died due to heat-related issues. His health deteriorated after the flag march, sources said.
In Patna, a polling official, Sanjay Kishore Sharan, died of a suspected heatstroke.
One polling officer died, and four fainted due to heatstrokes in Buxar district. All were on election duty. The deceased was a primary school teacher, Nagendra Singh (50). Dr Arun Kumar Singh at Sadar Hospital said the condition of four polling officers remained critical and two of them had been referred to Patna.
Sub-inspector Devnath Ram, of Bhojpur district, died of heatstroke in Dehri, Rohtas district.
In Daltonganj, Jharkhand, the civil surgeon of Palamu, Dr Anil Kumar, said on Thursday that three people, including a minor — Sandip Sao (9), railway worker Mukesh Meena (32), and Shanta Devi (30) — had died due to the heatwave and related illness in the past 36 hours, while the administration is ascertaining the cause of death of a male train passenger who was found unconscious at Daltonganj railway station. Daltonganj recorded 47.5°C on Tuesday, and 47.7°C on Wednesday.
