Shekhar Suman is not the one to mince words and often shares his honest thoughts in interviews. The actor, riding high on the success of Heeramandi, recently opened up about the criticism the series has faced from across the border.
Several viewers from Pakistan slammed Sanjay Leela Bhansali for historical inaccuracies in Heeramandi. When asked about the same, Shekhar Suman told Bollywood Hungama, “Padosi mulk ke kuch log hain (There are some people of the neighbouring country) who are feeling very jealous about the fact ki inhone kyu bana dia (Why did they make it)? Bhai aap bana lete (You could have made it) and why are you even discussing our Heeramandi? We don’t discuss your films. We don’t even know whether you make films.”
He further defended SLB’s vision and stated that a lot of people were overly concerned and critical about Heeramandi, discussing and questioning the historical accuracy, authenticity, and chronology. He mentioned that Bhansali is renowned for his dystopian sagas and for crafting his own cinematic worlds. Shekhar emphasized that cinema, as an art form, shouldn’t be subjected to excessive questioning, including interpretations, as they represent the filmmaker’s perspective. He added that Bhansali hadn’t intended to create a documentary on Heeramandi but rather drew inspiration from it to construct his narrative.
