CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu hooch tragedy death toll nearly tripled on Thursday, rising from 14 on Wednesday to 38. CM M K Stalin ordered a commission of inquiry led by Madras HC retired judge P Gokuldas to probe the incident and announced an ex gratia of Rs 10 lakh for the kin of each victim and Rs 50,000 for those undergoing treatment.
BJP state unit president K Annamalai urged Union home minister Amit Shah to order CBI to probe the crime.The state govt had transferred the case to CB-CID.
The victims are being treated in govt hospitals in Kallakurichi, Salem, Villpuram and JIPMER in Puducherry. At least 24 people are in critical condition, while 108, including eight women, were being treated as in-patients. State sports minister Udhayanidhi Stalin visited Kallakurichi hospital and later handed over the ex gratia to the kin of the dead and to those in hospital.
Expressing “shock and sadness”, Stalin said that the commission would investigate the contributing factors and recommend measures to prevent future occurrences. “The commission will conduct a thorough probe into the incident and submit its report within three months,” Stalin said. He issued a series of directives to ministers, chief secretary Shiv Das Meena, home secretary P Amudha, and DGP Shankar Jiwal, along with prohibition and excise staff, the district collector and the SP of Kallakurichi.
Earlier in the day, the state assembly paid homage to the victims of the tragedy on day one of its session.
Stalin instructed the home secretary and DGP to immediately rush to Kallakurichi, conduct a thorough investigation and submit a report within two days.
