Aamir Khan recalls how he changed the climax of Rang De Basanti: ‘Originally, we kill the defence minister and we try to escape’ | Hindi Movie News – Times of India

Rang De Basanti, the 2006 Aamir Khan starrer, remains one of Bollywood’s most iconic films. It is known for its memorable songs and gripping storyline. But did you know that the original climax of the film was different?
In a recent conversation with Cinemaanreal, Aamir Khan revealed how he suggested a new ending for the movie. He shared that in the original script, the characters kill the defense minister and try to escape, with each one of them getting shot. However, Aamir questioned the logic behind the characters running away.
“Originally what the climax was that we kill the defence minister and we try to escape from the city and each one of us gets shot at different places. So I asked Mehra, ‘I love your script (but) the end doesn’t make sense to me because why are they running? Do they feel they have done something wrong?’ So he was like, ‘ya, why are they running?'” Aamir recalled.
The superstar felt it didn’t align with the film’s themes, as the characters were inspired by Bhagat Singh, who didn’t run from his cause. Instead, Aamir proposed an alternate climax where the group takes over a TV studio to communicate their message live to the public.

Director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra liked Aamir’s suggestion and decided to incorporate it into Rang De Basanti. “I took that and told Mehra that I had this story and I will now not make it because the climax is gone… But he liked it and we fitted that climax scene into Rang De Basanti,” Aamir said.

The film, which starred Aamir alongside Siddharth, R. Madhavan, Atul Kulkarni, Soha Ali Khan, Sharman Joshi, Kunal Kapoor, and Alice Patten, told the story of five young men who get inspired by freedom fighters from India’s past. It broke box office records, won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film, and was even nominated for a BAFTA award.
