The actor was in Zimbabwe and as she was exploring a grocery store, she was in disbelief seeing shelves well-stocked with soft drinks, frozen meat and fruits.
“Look at this grocery store. It’s huge! It’s absolutely humongous. In Africa, baby. Yeah. Believe it, believe it, believe it, believe it. Africa. Zimbabwe. Uh-huh,” she said in the viral video. She also showed organic strawberry, sugar cane and dates before leading the audience to the frozen food section.
“Tiffany Haddish is surprised that there’s a grocery stores in Africa..? What’s wrong with these people?” one X user wrote in a post Sunday.
Another X user wrote, “Tiffany this ain’t the time to be a comedian,” with another adding to the chain, saying, “Which part was meant to be funny?”
Haddish replied to some of the comments and said it was not funny and she was just showing her people that they were told wrong things. Zimbabwean influencer Plot Mhako defended Haddish and said people who slammed her missed the dark humour. “I think many people who criticized Tiffany Haddish’s video might have missed the dark humor and jest in it. As a comedian, her portrayal reflects a widely held negative perception about some African countries, providing a satirical take on the reality,” Plot told CNN.
“I am an American a Black one at that and told for years that people are starving in Africa, showed pictures of babies with flies on them. Told crazy stories of how they kill each other and there is war everyday there. I asked my black friends to go with me and they were scared. We got here and I have been eyes full of tears finding out the truth. The media be lying. I thought I would share cause I know people in the USA that believe Africans don’t have anything,” she posted on X but then deleted later.
