After attack, Bengal junior doctors threaten return to cease-work | Kolkata News – Times of India

KOLKATA: Junior doctors across Bengal have threatened to return to complete cease-work from Monday, citing security concerns following the assault on some colleagues and nurses at College of Medicine & Sagore Dutta Hospital near Kolkata on Friday.
They declared that they will go on cease-work after SC hearing on Monday on RG Kar rape-murder case. They gave the state govt a 5pm deadline to demonstrate its seriousness in turning medical colleges and hospitals safe. The decision was taken Saturday after a marathon general body meeting of West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front (WBJDF).
“The assault on our colleagues happened on Friday when WBJDF was discussing issues of safety, security and threat culture. This incident has proved that govt has failed to instil confidence for us to return to the wards,” said Anustup Mukherjee, of WBJDF.
The junior doctors had lifted their 42-day-long cease-work partially on Sept 21 following protracted negotiations, first with CM Mamata Banerjee and then chief secretary Manoj Pant. While junior doctors at Sagore Dutta hospital resorted to an indefinite cease-work from Friday itself, 7,000-plus junior doctors across Bengal may tread the same path nine days after they resumed emergency duty.
