NEW DELHI: Union minister Hardeep Singh Puri took a potshot at the opposition INDIA bloc on Monday after several senior Congress leaders staged a protest against the appointment of a BJP MP as the pro-tem Speaker, by holding up copies of the Constitution outside Parliament.
Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi along with INDIA bloc leaders staged a protest in front of the Gandhi statue in Parliament holding copies of the Constitution against the appointment of BJP MP Bhartruhari Mahtab as pro-tem Speaker.
The opposition MPs said Mahtab’s appointment deviates from the traditional practice of appointing the senior-most member.
On June 26, the Lok Sabha Speaker will be elected. On June 27, President Droupadi Murmu is scheduled to address the joint sitting of both houses of Parliament.
Reacting to the protest, Puri took to X: “Oh the Irony of it all! As Charlie Chaplin said, it’s doing the wrong thing at the right moment! Or is it the other way round?”
The minister took potshots at the opposition leaders, stating that many of them were holding up copies of the Constitution “either upside down or some even with the cellophane cover still intact”.

He also noted that the oath-taking ceremony of the Lok Sabha MPs has coincided with the eve of the 49th anniversary of the Emergency, “the Black Day for the Constitution; & suspension and violation of democratic rights imposed by none other than the linear political ancestors of those who were displaying their new found fidelity to the Constitution was not lost on the people of India.”
“Modi 3.0 is a good time to remind all Indians to recall which government & leader have always upheld the constitution, and will continue to defend it against all attempts at undermining it, creating chaos and destabilising India!” he added.
