NEW DELHI: At least nine people died and many got injured after a “gust of wind” led to stage collapse at an election rally in northern Mexico on Wednesday evening, the state governor said.
Presidential candidate Jorge Alvarez Maynez who was campaigning for his party Citizens Movement party in Nuevo Leon managed to escape unhurt.
In a post on X, Maynez later said, “After the accident in San Pedro Garza, where a gust of wind collapsed the stage where we were, I moved to the San José hospital.”
“I am fine and in communication with state authorities to follow up on what happened.The only important thing right now is to care for the victims of the accident”, he added.

The injured have been taken to the hospital.
Miguel Treviño, the mayor of San Pedro Garza Garcia, said in a post on X, “The Police and Civil Protection of SPGG respond to the fall of a stage at a campaign event, in which trapped and injured people are reported.”
“My prayers are with the victims of this incident. Thanks to our elements for their prompt response”, he added.
So far, over two dozen candidates for municipal seats have been killed during the campaign. However, it has not been plagued by campaign-related incidents.
