NEW DELHI: Tensions flared in Bahraich district of Uttar Pradesh after a violent clash during a Durga idol immersion in Mahasi on October 13.
The incident occurred when the procession passed through a Muslim-majority area and an argument broke out.
One person from the Hindu community died from gunshot wounds and several others were injured. Police have detained 30 people and are searching for the main suspect.

Shops and hospital pharmacies in the area were vandalized and set on fire by protesters.
Bahraich’s Superintendent of Police, Vrinda Shukla, said, “In Mahasi’s Maharajganj area, a procession was passing by a Masjid through a Muslim area. The groups argued on some issues. A person from the Hindu community died after bullets were fired on him and thereafter a tense situation arose.”
Security has been increased with the police conducting route marches to maintain order.
Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath stated, “Those who spoil the atmosphere in Mahsi of Bahraich district will not be spared. Safety is guaranteed to all, but instructions have been given to identify the rioters and those whose negligence led to the incident and take strict action against them.”
CM Yogi Adityanath also assured that the immersion of idols would continue as planned, with police and administration officials on-site to ensure smooth proceedings.
