NEW DELHI: The Basti Lok Sabha Constituency in Uttar Pradesh, a political powerhouse with significant influence on Indian politics, is gearing up for a high-stakes battle in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Following the Election Commission’s announcement on March 16, the elections are scheduled for May 25. As the 2024 elections approach, the electorate is more eager than ever to exercise their voting power.The key candidates for the 2024 elections in Basti are Dayashankar Mishra from the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Harish Dwivedi from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Ram Prasad Chaudhary from the Samajwadi Party (SP).
In the 2019 Basti parliamentary constituency elections, there were a total of 1,845,223 registered voters. Out of these, 1,054,539 cast valid votes. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate, Harish Chandra Alias Harish Dwivedi, emerged victorious, securing 471,162 votes. His closest competitor was Ram Prasad Chaudhary from the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), who garnered 440,808 votes, losing by a margin of 30,354 votes.
In the 2014 elections, Basti had 1,787,476 electors, with 1,048,534 valid votes cast. Harish Chandra Alias Harish Dwivedi of the BJP won the seat with 357,680 votes. Brij Kishor Singh “Dimpal” from the Samajwadi Party (SP) came in second with 324,118 votes, trailing by 33,562 votes.
Back in 2009, the constituency had 1,570,657 registered voters, and 773,779 of them voted validly. The BSP candidate, Arvind Kumar Chaudhary, won with 268,666 votes. Raj Kishor Singh of the SP was the runner-up with 163,456 votes, resulting in a loss of 105,210 votes.
In the 2004 elections, the total number of voters was not specified, but 576,404 valid votes were recorded. The BSP candidate, Lal Mani Prasad, won the seat with 155,223 votes, while the BJP candidate, Sriram Chauhan, secured 129,849 votes, losing by a margin of 25,374 votes.
