Bengal governor seeks action-taken report from CM Mamata on flogging video case | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: West Bengal governor CV Ananda Bose on Monday urged CM Mamata Banerjee to submit a report on the public flogging incident in the Uttar Dinajpur district.
The video of public flogging of a couple in Uttar Dinajpur’s Chopra went viral last week, sparking outrage all across the nation.
The man seen in a viral video beating up the couple with a bamboo stick was identified as Tajmul alias ‘JCB’, purportedly a TMC leader of Chopra area.He was later arrested and sent to police custody.
A day after the survivor lodged a police complaint seeking action against those who had publicly shamed her by putting her video online, her male companion’s mother filed a similar complaint.
Later, Chopra MLA Hamidul Rahman was served a show-cause notice by Trinamool Congress (TMC) after he commented on the flogged woman’s character. He had also received a phone call from Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, who expressed her displeasure.
“The Governor, exercising authority under Article 167 of the Constitution, along with Rule 30 of the Rules of Business for West Bengal framed under Article 166 of the Constitution, has asked the CM to provide details on the steps taken regarding the incident of public flogging of a couple in Chopra and the functioning of kangaroo courts with ineffective police intervention,” an official told news agency PTI.
The governor also urged the CM to submit a report on detailed actions taken against Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal and a DCP for alleged misinformation that defamed the governor’s office.
This comes a day after the home ministry launched disciplinary action against Kolkata Police Commissioner and DCP Central for “maligning” the Bengal governor’s office.
