CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu CM M K Stalin on Tuesday came down hard on PM Narendra Modi for his remarks at an election rally in Odisha the previous day that the missing keys of Ratna Bhandar treasury in Puri Jagannath temple “have gone to Tamil Nadu”.
“The speech hurts not just the sentiments of crores of people who worship Lord Jagannath but also hurts the good relationship that exists between Odisha and Tamil Nadu. Can Modi portray Tamils as robbers?” Stalin said. “Is this not an insult to Tamil Nadu by implying that Tamils are dishonest? Why is Modi so hostile towards Tamils?” he added.
Stalin alleged that Modi is adopting double standards when it comes to Tamils. “While coming to Tamil Nadu, he speaks highly of intelligence of Tamils, but when he campaigns elsewhere, he portrays Tamils as robbers,” he said.
Asking Modi to stop making such statements against Tamils for the sake of votes, Stalin said: “Modi, who should set examples by campaigning in a constructive manner and by putting forward achievements of his govt, is creating enmity between states through his slanderous speeches.”
Reacting to Stalin’s statement, BJP state president K Annamalai said the CM “misunderstood” the context of Modi’s speech.
