NEW DELHI: Ratcheting up pressure on the Adani issue, Congress will hit the streets on Aug 22 to demand a JPC probe into the “mega scam” demanding the resignation of SEBI chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch in the wake of fresh Hindenburg allegations.
The nationwide agitation, decided in a meeting of top Congress leaders chaired by Mallikarjun Kharge and attended by Rahul Gandhi, will include “gherao of Enforcement Directorate offices across the country ” – in what appears a ploy to hammer home the argument that the top agency is inert on a major controversy even as it is quick to act against opposition members.
The party will also kick off public mobilisation in coming days to pressure the Modi govt to undertake “caste census” and “respect the Constitution”.
AICC general secretary K C Venugopal told reporters, “There should be a JPC inquiry on the Adani mega scam in which the PM is fully involved and in which the financial market regulator has now been found to be severely compromised.”
“We will have a national campaign. We will chalk out a programme in detail in the coming days for district to national level,” he added, announcing the resolution passed by the meeting.
It is learnt that Rahul asked the state functionaries to espouse the concerns of the common man. AICC suggested that govt is on the backfoot and it is the right time to compound the pressure.
Congress’s focus appears trained on the Adani issue, which it argues “is a key strand of prevalent corruption”. Rahul explained the allegations and what, he said, has remained unanswered till now from the first Hindenburg expose. Rahul is said to have told the functionaries that corruption has become common in the BJP-led regime and that bureaucracy too is now concerned since questions would be raised if INDIA bloc comes to power.
During the discussion, sources said, a member suggested that focus should be on caste census and a decision on sub-categorisation should follow the census.
The party meet also saw members demand that BJP should be confronted in its bid to appropriate Tiranga through yatras, as RSS had opposed the tricolour when it was adopted.
