Day after IGI, canopy outside Rajkot airport collapses after rain | India News – Times of India

RAJKOT: A day after a roof collapsed at Delhi airport killing one person and leaving scores injured, a fibre canopy outside Gujarat’s Rajkot International Airport terminal crashed on Saturday just when a flight from Mumbai was scheduled to land.
No one was injured and no flight operations were affected due to the incident that occurred at the pick-up and drop-off point outside the interim terminal building. The airport, located at Hirasar, was inaugurated by PM Modi in July last year.
“The canopy collapsed due to water accumulation and heavy wind, and nobody was injured in the incident. We have deployed a team to clear the water above the canopy,” Diganta Borah, airport director, told TOI.
Sources said the canopy is made of a sustainable fabric using wood pulp considered a high-end material known for being soft and durable.
New terminal at Rajkot airport was to be ready by end of Feb
The airport has been functioning in a temporary building meant for cargo handling. The new permanent terminal was supposed to be completed by end of Feb. However, it is still under construction and the new deadline has been set for Aug 15 this year.
The greenfield airport spread over 1,025 ha was built at the cost of Rs 1,405 crore. With a 3,040m-long and 45m-wide runway, it handles 10 to 12 flights connecting destinations like Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Pune and Goa, and 3,000 to 4,000 passengers travel every day.
