A verbal dispute in East Oakland turned fatal on Saturday morning, leaving two dead and two injured, according to the Oakland Police Department.
The incident occurred in the 1600 block of 83rd Avenue, where officers responded to a call just after 9 am and discovered four people with gunshot wounds.
“Two of the victims died on site and two others were taken to a hospital,” police said in the statement.
Authorities reported that the shooting took place when one person involved in the verbal altercation drew a firearm and fired multiple shots before escaping the scene in a vehicle. The identities of the victims are being withheld pending notification of their families.
Oakland, a city with a population of 400,000, has been grappling with issues related to crime and public safety. The city’s mayor, Sheng Thao, and the county’s district attorney, Pamela Price, are both facing recall elections in November.
In June, the FBI conducted a raid on the home shared by Thao, her partner, and their son as part of an investigation that also involved searches of other properties owned by a politically connected family that owns a recycling business.
