INDORE: GRP officers on Sunday said they had solved the murder of the woman whose dismembered body parts were found on two trains in Indore and Rishikesh. The killer? A 60-year-old man, who lured her to his Ujjain home by offering her shelter for the night, but drugged her and tried to rape her.
Police identified the accused as Kamlesh Patel, a history-sheeter with several theft cases, who lived in the trackside slums at Dewas Gate, close to Ujjain station. He has admitted to the murder, said GRP inspector Sanjay Shukla.
It was Patel’s speech-and-hearing-impaired wife Aarti, who testified against him, narrating through gestures how she woke up to find him trying to rape the woman, bludgeon her when she resisted, and then strangle her with a length of rope, Shukla said.
Patel then spent 4.5 hours cutting the victim‘s body into pieces after locking his wife out of the house, say police. Aarti told investigators that Patel had a habit of picking up homeless women at the station, bringing them home and having physical relations with them in front of her.
Shukla said police recovered the victim’s clothes, her watch, slippers, battery of her mobile phone, a packet of sleeping pills, a newly purchased and sharpened butcher’s knife, and an iron bolt from the suspect’s home.
Victim’s phone location led cops to the accused
Piecing together the grisly crime, police said the victim had left home in a fit of rage on June 6 after quarreling with her husband. She travelled to Ujjain by bus and then walked to the railway station to catch a train to Mathura.
She was sitting on platform 1 when Patel spotted her and approached her. “The accused tried to strike up a friendly conversation with the woman. After talking to him for a while, she confided in him, revealing that she had left her husband and intended to travel to Mathura,” said Shukla.
Kamlesh told her that Malwa Express, which went to Mathura, had already left and offered to take her home, Shukla said. Patel told her his wife was at home and she had nothing to worry.
On reaching Patel’s home, the woman requested him to purchase a SIM card for her since she did not want to switch on her father’s phone, say police. He bought her a SIM card in his name, but it was never activated. Unknown to her, he also bought a strip of sleeping pills.
The next afternoon, on June 7, Patel drugged her by mixing four sleeping pills in her lunch. When she began to lose consciousness, Patel tried to rape her but she fought back and screamed for help. Aarti, who was sleeping, couldn’t hear anything.
Furious that she was resisting and afraid that someone outside would hear her, Patel struck her in the face with a large iron bolt, causing her to fall unconscious, say police. Aarti has told police that she woke up suddenly and saw him attacking the woman. When she tried to stop him, Patel threatened her and then strangled the unconscious woman with a rope. Patel went to a shop with his wife and bought a knife for Rs 450 and got it sharpened.
Around 3am, when Aarti went to relieve herself, Patel locked the door from inside, dragged the woman’s body to the washing area and began cutting her up. He made three packages of the body parts.
On June 8, when Indore-Nagda Express stopped in the outer area of Ujjain station, Patel placed two of these packages under a seat. The train left before he could put the third bag.
One of the clues that led police to Patel was the victim’s phone location. She hadn’t switched it on, but Patel did. When a police constable dialled the number, Patel received the call and spoke in a soft voice, pretending to be a woman. He said that he was in Mathura. “The voice of the accused is similar to a woman, so the constable was confused,” said Shukla.
