Delhi court convicts Narmada Bachao Andolan leader Medha Patkar in defamation case

NEW DELHI: Delhi court on Friday convicted Medha Patkar leader of Narmada Bachao Andolan leader in defamation case filed by Delhi LG VK Saxena. The verdict was delivered by Metropolitan Magistrate Raghav Sharma.
According to the provisions of the law, Patkar could face a prison sentence of up to two years, a monetary fine, or both as a consequence of the conviction.
The legal dispute between Patkar and Saxena dates back to 2000 when the activist initiated a lawsuit against Saxena for publishing advertisements that were critical of her and the NBA. At the time, Saxena held the position of chief at the Ahmedabad-based NGO National Council for Civil Liberties.
In addition to the suit filed by Patkar, Saxena had also lodged two separate cases against her, alleging that she made defamatory comments about him during a television interview and issued a slanderous press statement.
