Delhi HC Fury Over Coaching Centre Deaths: MCD, Police in Dock – Times of India

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Friday, August 2 escalated its criticism of authorities over the tragic demise of three UPSC aspirants in a coaching center basement. The court expressed its inability to comprehend how such a catastrophe could occur, suggesting it has become a norm with MCD officials displaying a nonchalant attitude.
“Unable to fathom how 3 UPSC aspirants got drowned; it has become norm and MCD officials not bothered,” the court remarked.
The bench questioned the MCD’s response, demanding to know why officials failed to inform the commissioner about non-functional storm water drains in the Rajinder Nagar area.
In a scathing observation, the court took a jibe at the Delhi Police, stating, “Mercifully, you have not challaned rainwater for entering into basement, the way you arrested the SUV driver for driving his car there.” The court emphasized that respect for the police is earned by apprehending culprits, not innocent individuals.
A petitioner’s counsel alleged potential police complicity, citing a police chowki’s proximity to the incident. However, the MCD lawyer maintained that actions have been taken against all parties except the coaching center, which is considered case property.
The court placed its hopes on the MCD commissioner, asserting, “The city’s hopes rest on your actions.”
The hearing is ongoing, with the court’s scrutiny intensifying on the role of various agencies in the tragedy.
