Delhi police files FIR over ‘lewd’ comments on late Captain Anshuman’s widow Smriti Singh | India News – Times of India

The Delhi Police have initiated legal action against a resident of Delhi for making inappropriate and offensive remarks online about the widow of Captain Anshuman Singh, a recipient of the Kirti Chakra award. The police responded to a letter from the National Commission for Women (NCW), which demanded the man’s arrest and a comprehensive report within three days.
According to the police, a complaint was filed by the NCW, claiming that a social media user had posted an extremely vulgar and disrespectful comment on a photograph of the late soldier’s widow. The commission pointed out that the man’s comment violates “Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and Section 67 of the Information Technology Act, 2000.” The NCW strongly denounced this behavior and called for swift police intervention.
After conducting a preliminary review of the complaint’s contents, the police registered an FIR under the relevant sections of the BNS-2023 and the IT Act 2000 at the Special Cell Police Station. An investigation into the matter has commenced and is currently ongoing.
Captain Anshuman Singh, a medical officer, was stationed with the 26 Punjab at the Siachen Glacier area. On July 19, 2023, a fire broke out at an Indian Army ammunition dump at his camp. Upon witnessing a fibreglass hut engulfed in flames, Captain Singh immediately took action to rescue four to five people trapped inside. He entered the burning medical investigation room to retrieve a crucial medical aid box but tragically lost his life due to the intense fire and strong winds. In recognition of his bravery and sacrifice, Captain Singh was posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra.
The award was received by Captain Singh’s wife, Smriti, and his mother from President Droupadi Murmu in a ceremony honoring his valor and dedication to duty.
Recalling the day of the incident Smriti had said, “On July 18, we had a long conversation about how our life will be in the next 50 years — we would build a house, have kids. On the morning of 19th I get a call that he is no more. For the first 7-8 hours, we could not accept that anything like this could have happened. Till date, I am trying to cope up … thinking maybe it is not true. Now that I have the Kirti Chakra in my hand, I realise it is true. But it’s okay, he is a hero. We can manage a little of our lives because he has managed a lot. He gave up his life and family so that the other three families could be saved.”
