‘Ghar Wapsi’: Taj Mohiuddin leaves DPAP, to rejoin Congress ahead of Assembly polls | India News – Times of India



NEW DELHI: Former minister from Jammu and Kashmir Taj Mohiuddin declared his decision to quit the Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) led by Ghulam Nabi Azad on Saturday. Mohiuddin also said that he is set to return to the Congress party.
“I have intentions of ‘ghar wapsi (homecoming)’ but there was no question of doing it until I could ask my workers. Now, my workers have told me in unison to do it.So, I am doing ‘ghar wapsi’ very soon,” he told news agency PTI.
“My workers asked me to rejoin the Congress, so I decided to leave the DPAP and rejoin the Congress,” he added.
Furthermore, the former J-K Minister conveyed his eagerness to participate in the elections, stating that he is prepared to contest if the Congress party grants him a ticket.
Assembly elections are set to be conducted a in J&K. The chief election commissioner Rajiv Kumar announced on Friday that the Assembly elections in the Union Territory will be conducted in three phases, spanning from September 18 to October 1. The voters in Jammu and Kashmir will exercise their right to vote on September 18 and September 25, with the third phase coinciding with the Haryana elections on October 1. The counting of votes for both Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir will take place on October 4.
The upcoming elections in Jammu and Kashmir will mark the first assembly polls in a decade, as the last election took place in 2014. The PDP-BJP coalition government collapsed in June 2018 when the BJP withdrew its support for the then-Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti.
Jammu and Kashmir has a total of 87.09 lakh electors, comprising 44.46 lakh males, 42.62 lakh females, 169 transgender individuals, 82,590 persons with disabilities (PwDs), 73,943 very senior citizens, 2,660 centenarians, 76,092 service electors, and 3.71 lakh first-time voters. In December 2022, the Supreme Court instructed the Centre to finalize the election process by September 30, 2024.
