Google has finally launched its Gemini AI app in India, which supports nine Indian languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu. Notably, Google rebranded its Bard AI chatbot as Gemini in February and subsequently launched a separate app. However, Gemini users in India will have to wait for nearly four months to get the standalone app, which should make using the chatbot more convenient.
Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai made the announcement regarding Gemini’s India app launch in a post on X (formerly Twitter). Pichai wrote, “Exciting news! 🇮🇳 Today, we’re launching the Gemini mobile app in India, available in English and 9 Indian languages. We’re also adding these local languages to Gemini Advanced, plus other new features, and launching Gemini in Google Messages in English.”
Gemini is coming to Google Messages:
Google has also announced that it is rolling out Gemini in Google Messages in India, which will allow users to help draft messages, brainstorm ideas, plan events and more directly from within the Messages app. However, the new feature will only be rolled out in English and on “select devices” initially.
The tech giant revealed earlier this month that Gemini in Google Messages would be limited to some Pixel and flagship Samsung devices.
Google also announced that it is bringing the Gemini 1.5 Pro language model to India. The model comes with a 1 million token window, which means it can handle huge amounts of input, including long documents (up to 1,500 pages) and hours of videos.
How to access Gemini app in India:
To access Gemini on Android, users will need to download the new Gemini app or opt-in via Google Assistant. After selecting Gemini as their default assistant on Android, users will be able to access the chatbot with a corner swipe, or even by pressing the power button on some devices. Meanwhile, iOS users will be able to access Gemini directly from the Google app “in the coming weeks”.
