NEW DELHI: The government on Thursday ordered a ban on the manufacture, sale, and distribution of over 150 drugs sold in fixed-dose combinations as they are likely to pose a risk to humans. These include some of the commonly used painkiller drugs, multivitamins, and drugs used in the treatment of fatty liver with diabetes and irritable bowel syndrome among others, reports Durgesh Nandan Jha.
According to the govt notification, the drugs were examined by a Centre appointed expert panel that found the FDCs to be “irrational”.
The drugs technical advisory board also examined each FDC and remarked that “there is no therapeutic justification for the ingredients contained in the FDC”.
The notification said, “The FDCs may involve risk to human beings. Hence, it is necessary to prohibit their manufacture, sale or distribution under Section 26A of Drugs and Cosmetics Act.”
