‘Govt left his family helpless…’ : Rahul Gandhi slams Agniveer policy | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday slammed the BJP government for the implementation of the Agniveer scheme, claiming that the policy had led to the family of the jawans becoming ‘helpless’.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Rahul said that he met with the family of Ajay Singh who had a lifelong dream of serving his nation by joining the army permanently. However, according to the Congress MP, PM Modi shattered Ajay’s aspirations by implementing the Agniveer scheme, which limited his service to a shorter duration.
“He wanted to serve the country by joining the army permanently, but Narendra Modi broke his dreams and made him Agniveer, and when he made the supreme sacrifice, The government left his family helpless,” said Rahul.

Rahul said the nation would never forgive the government for this ‘injustice.’

‘Centre turning soldiers into labourers’: Rahul

The former Congress chief has strongly opposed the Agniveer scheme and has said on multiple occasions that when the INDIA bloc comes to power, they will scrap the policy.
Speaking at a public meeting in Haryana’s Mahendragarh, Gandhi accused PM Modi of neglecting the welfare of Indian soldiers under the scheme.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reduced India’s jawans to mere labourers with his Agniveer scheme. The Army does not endorse this scheme; it is a creation of the Prime Minister’s Office. Once the Congress forms the government at the Centre, we will discard this scheme,” Gandhi asserted.
“We will cancel Agniveer and will do it like it used to happen before. Every youth of India knows that the meaning of Agniveer is to make the soldiers of India labourers,” said Rahul.
