Govt plans to build 62,500km of rural roads by 2029 – Times of India



NEW DELHI: The Cabinet on Wednesday approved a plan to provide all-weather connectivity to 25,000 rural habitations by building 62,500 km of roads and construction and upgradation of bridges between 2024 to 2029 under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana-IV.
The total outlay will be Rs 70,125 crore, including a central share of Rs 49,087.5 crore and state share of Rs 21,037.5 crore.
Already 7.66 lakh km of roads in rural areas has been constructed. Under Phase-IV, govt seeks to pave the way for infrastructure development in the remotest villages, including those in hilly terrains, far-flung areas in the North-east and those along borders. Govt said that the “all-weather roads will play the role of catalysts for the required socio-economic development and transformation of the remote rural areas”. Road construction under the scheme is expected to generate employment of 40 crore human days.
The scheme will cover unconnected habitations of population size 500 plus in plains, more than 250 in the North-east and hill sates/UTs, special category areas.
