LUCKNOW: An alumnus of IIT-Kanpur and IIM-Lucknow, Rahul Verma, was handed down a life sentence by a special CBI court in Lucknow on Wednesday for the murder of 30-year-old Mumbai-based fashion designer Adesh Bajpai, reported.
Special CBI judge Anurodh Mishra pronounced the sentence after finding Verma guilty of charges under IPC 302, 364, and 120 B.A fine of Rs 75,000 was also imposed on him. Adesh, who met Rahul through a dating site, visited Kanpur on Aug 10, 2008 to meet him. However, he went missing afterward. On Aug 16, Adesh’s father Suryakant filed a missing person’s report with Kanpur police.
CBI began probing the case in 2010, following a directive from Allahabad HC.
Surveillance footage confirmed that Rahul – who was then studying MTech at IIT-Kanpur – had taken Adesh to his hostel room on the campus.
The probe had taken a significant turn when human remains, including a skull, were discovered in a ditch on the IIT-Kanpur campus 15 days after Adesh’s father had filed the missing report.
