India expresses deep concern over loss of civilian lives in Rafah | India News – Times of India

India expressed deep concern over the “heartbreaking” loss of civilian lives in an Israeli strike on a displacement camp in Rafah, while calling for protection of the civilian population and respect for international humanitarian law.
A military strike in Gaza had killed dozens of Palestinians, after which the US too had urged Israel to protect civilians. “We have consistently called for protection of civilian population,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, while noting that the Israeli side has already accepted responsibility for it as a “tragic accident” and announced an investigation into the incident.
Asked about India’s position on the recent recognition of Palestine by Ireland, Norway and Spain, the official recalled India was one of the first countries to recognise the state of Palestine in the late 1980s. “We have long supported a two state solution which entails the establishment of a sovereign, viable, and independent state of Palestine within recognised and mutually agreed borders, living side by side with Israel in peace.”
