India, Maldives resolved ‘rough patches, misunderstandings’ in ties: Foreign minister Zameer | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: India and Maldives have resolved the ‘misunderstandings’ and the ‘rough patches’ that the two countries witnessed as the Muizzu-led government, who is known for his pro-China stance, took to office, Maldivian foreign minister Moosa Zameer said on Friday.
“At the start of our government, we did have some rough patches (with India), you know,” Zameer said as quoted by The Edition newspaper.
“(We) have good relations with both China and India, and both countries continue to support Maldives,” he added.
Muizzu is expected to make an official visit to India “very soon,” according to his spokesperson who confirmed this on Tuesday.
The two nations witnessed a strained relationship shortly after Mohamed Muizzu assumed the office of President. He demanded the withdrawal of Indian military personnel stationed at three aviation platforms gifted by India to the Maldives. Following negotiations, the Indian military personnel were replaced by civilians.
Tensions further escalated when three Maldivian deputy ministers made controversial remarks about India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on social media. The Maldives foreign ministry had distanced itself from these comments, and the three junior ministers were subsequently suspended.
Unlike his predecessors, who visited New Delhi first after taking office, Muizzu chose to travel to Turkiye and then China for his initial state visits. He only visited New Delhi on June 9 to attend PM Modi’s swearing-in ceremony.
