Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan once again raised objections in the Rajya Sabha on Monday, August 5, when Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar addressed her as ‘Jaya Amitabh Bachchan’. The actor-politician called this a ‘new drama’ introduced in Parliament and voiced her objection to women’s identities being linked to their husbands’ names.
In a video shared on ANI, Jaya is seen objecting when Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar addresses her by her husband Amitabh Bachchan’s name in the House.“Sir, I hope you know the meaning of Amitabh. I mean, I am proud of the association with my marriage and my husband, but I am just saying that I am very happy and proud of my husband’s achievements,” Jaya Bachchan remarked.
She called the whole incident a ‘drama’. “Ye drama aap logon ne naya shuru kiya hai, pehle nahi tha (This is a new drama initiated by you all. It was not like this before),” she added.
In response, Chairman Dhankhar mentioned the procedural norms tied to election certificates. He explained, “However, Jaya Ji, the name that appears in the election certificate is what is used, and you can get the name changed; there is a provision for that.”

The veteran actress further enquired why Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar had not included his wife’s name after his own. Unmarried Khattar, humorously replied, “As for my wife’s name in front of mine… not in this birth (since Khattar is unmarried); for this, you will have to wait until the next birth.”
