Kiran Rao has a lot to be proud about after her film ‘Laapataa Ladies‘ was screened at the Supreme Court of India, today, August 9th, 2024. The slice-of-life rural drama was showcased as part of a gender sensitization program for sitting judges, their families, and other court staff.
Following the premiere, Kiran shared her thoughts with Law Today inside the court premises, expressing her delight and honour.When asked if audiences might expect a courtroom drama from her in the future, Kiran responded, “I’d love to. I just went in there and wished I could have spent the whole day watching. So, yes, maybe someday.”
When asked about ‘Laapataa Ladies’ being selected for the Gender Sensitization Training at the SC, the director said, “I am deeply honoured by this privilege to show our film to sitting judges, their families, the staff, especially in the 75th year of our great institution in the Supreme Court. So I am very very honoured in this role.”
‘Laapataa Ladies’ had its first premiere at the 48th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 8th, 2023, before its theatrical release on March 1st, 2024. The comedy-drama received widespread acclaim during its big-screen runs and continued to surpass other titles after its debut on OTT.
Produced by Rao along with Aamir Khan, and Jyoti Deshpande, the film features Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, Chhaya Kadam, and Ravi Kishan in key roles. It follows the story of two newly-wed brides who are accidentally swapped during a train journey to their husbands’ homes, ultimately transforming their lives in unexpected ways.
Rao has produced several films but has only directed two films with a 13-year gap between them. Among her notable productions are ‘Peepli Live,’ ‘Dangal,’ ‘Talaash,’ ‘Delhi Belly,’ ‘Secret Superstar,’ and ‘Rubaru Roshni.’ She also presented the 2013 drama ‘Ship of Theseus’ and was an associate producer for ‘Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na.’
