Mahesh Bhatt recently reminisced about his 1986 blockbuster ‘Naam‘. Bhatt described the film as a dream project, especially due to his collaboration with Salim Khan. He praised Nutan’s performance and recounted how Sanjay Dutt joined the cast.
Interestingly, Bhatt revealed that Dilip Kumar was initially considered for the lead role but declined the offer due to financial concerns.Discussing Naam and his collaboration with Salim Khan, Bhatt told Radio Nasha that Salim, dealing with a challenging phase after the Salim-Javed split, was eager for a project that would restore his acclaim. Rajendra Kumar‘s decision to produce the film came at a time when Sanjay Dutt, newly sober and driven by a desire to prove himself, joined the cast. Bhatt emphasized that when genuine needs are addressed, remarkable outcomes can emerge, with Salim Khan being a key driving force behind Naam.

He also commended Kumar Gaurav and Nutan for their exceptional contributions to the film. Bhatt described Kumar as outstanding, noting that Sanjay Dutt’s performance benefited greatly from Gaurav’s role. He lauded Nutan as a tremendous asset to the film, praising her remarkable discipline and dedication. Despite early call times, Nutan would arrive hours in advance to prepare, showcasing her exceptional professionalism and talent.

Recalling an incident where Khan sought Dilip Kumar for Naam, Bhatt explained that they were close to finalizing Kumar’s involvement. However, due to personal and financial disagreements between the producers Mushir and Riaz, Kumar was hesitant. He had reservations about Mushir’s unwillingness to negotiate on finances, which ultimately prevented the collaboration from happening.
Naam garnered critical acclaim and was nominated for several awards at the time.
