NEW DELHI: In the wake of violence and protests in Manipur, internet and broadband services have been suspended on Tuesday across the state for five days, until September 15. Indefinite curfew has also been imposed in several parts of Manipur.

- Earlier in the day, a curfew was imposed in Manipur’s
Imphal East , Imphal West, andThoubal districts due to escalating law and order concerns.
- The district magistrate of Imphal East, in an order dated September 10, revoked a previously granted curfew relaxation and enforced a total curfew starting from 11:00 AM.
- Essential services, including
healthcare , power, municipal staff, media personnel, and court functions, are exempted from the curfew.
- The curfew in Imphal districts followed student plans to intensify protests, demanding the removal of the DGP and security advisor for their alleged failure to manage the law and order situation.
- Similarly, the Thoubal district magistrate, Ahanthem Subhash Singh, issued prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, in response to potential disruptions from a rally organised by the “All Thoubal Apunba Student” on September 9.
- The order restricts gatherings and bans the carrying of firearms and weapons, with penalties for violators.
- Meanwhile, chief minister N Biren Singh held an emergency meeting on Saturday with MLAs from the ruling coalition, which included the BJP, Naga People’s Front, and National People’s Party (NPP), according to official sources.
- Shortly after, chief minister went to Raj Bhavan to brief governor L Acharya on the situation.
- The violence intensified on Friday when suspected militants launched long-range rockets in Moirang, Bishnupur district, Imphal Valley. The attack resulted in the death of a priest and injuries to five others, with Moirang located over 200kms east of Jiribam.
- Manipur Inspector General of Police (Operations) I K Muivah has announced that serious cases, including those involving drone bombings, will be transferred to central agencies for further investigation.
