Baba Siddique, senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader, died on Saturday after being shot outside his son Zeeshan Siddique’s office in Bandra East.
The Maharashtra‘s former minister suffered multiple gunshot wounds before he was admitted to Lilavati Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Three unknown assailants were involved in the attack, and authorities are now probing to uncover the motive and identify the perpetrators.
Here’s what we know so far:
- Two people related to the firing of NCP leader Baba Siddique have been taken into custody, said Mumbai Police.
- Chief minister Eknath Shinde said one of the accused is from Uttar Pradesh and other is from Haryana. He said the third accused is on the run.
- I have given instructions to the police that nobody in Mumbai should take the law into their hands . And the underworld should not rear its head, said CM Shinde.
- Maharashtra home minister and depty CM Devendra Fadnavis and senior police officials have reached Lilavati Hospital.
- Security has been tightened outside Lilavati Hospital.
- Probe has been given to Mumbai crime branch, confirmed additional commissioner Parminder Singh Dahiya.
- Police have cordoned off the crime scene at Bandra East.
- “Baba Siddique’s murder is a matter of concern. The government should make a special team and investigate this. There seems to be a huge conspiracy. Strict action should be taken,” said BJP leader Kirit Somaiya.
- “The Mumbai Congress is deeply saddened by the passing of Baba Siddique Ji. His tireless service to the people and his dedication to the community will forever be remembered. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time. May his soul rest in peace,” Mumbai Congress to which Baba Siddique was earlier affiliated before he joined NCP, wrote on X.
- “The news about Baba Siddique is very disturbing. The concern here is that the law and order situation in Maharashtra is going really down and it has failed. The BJP led Mahayuti needs to answer to the people of Maharashtra why they have failed to bring law & order under control. People are taking the law into their own hands and feel free to do what they want because there is no fear of the law. The Home Department led by Devendra Fadnavis seems to have failed,” said Clyde Crasto, spokesperson of Sharad Pawar’s NCP.
