Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen on Friday declared December 6 “A Day of Remembrance for Mahatma Gandhi” in the state, as stated in a consulate press release.
“December 6 marks a significant day as we come together to celebrate the unveiling of this statue and reflect on the principles of non-violence, tolerance and justice that Gandhi espoused,” the proclamation stated.
The governor also unveiled a statue of Mahatma Gandhi at the Governor’s Office within the historic Nebraska State Capitol in Lincoln. This is the first such installation across nine states under the Indian Consulate in Seattle’s jurisdiction.
The consulate’s press release called Gandhi as a worldwide symbol of peace, non-violence and justice, who has influenced numerous individuals and movements globally through his dedication to truth and human dignity.
It further mentioned that the statue would honour Gandhi’s contributions while fostering cultural understanding and unity amongst Nebraska’s diverse population.
The Indian Consulate in Seattle collaborated with Nebraska’s Governor’s Office to select the location at the State Capitol, considering it most appropriate for honouring Gandhi’s legacy.
Lieutenant Governor Joe Kelly, former Senator Ben Nelson, coach Tom Osborne, Consul General Prakash Gupta, and prominent Indian-American community members were also present during the ceremony.
The Seattle Indian Consulate began operations in November 2023, serving Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska and Alaska.
