‘Not a single person …’ : Indian diaspora in Geneva raise RG Kar rape-murder. What EAM said | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: The outrage to West Bengal’s RG Kar rape-murder and the concern around women safety seems no longer just restricted to the borders of India. It has transcended national borders and reached the diaspora in US.
External affairs minister, Jaishankar, who addressed the Indian diaspora in US on Friday was posed a similar question by an attendant irked by the delay in justice, referring to the month since the trainee doctor was raped at a state-run hospital in Kolkata.
Responding to the question, EAM Jaishankar condemned violence against woman in the recent rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Hospital, saying “that there is not a single person in the country who is not outraged by the incident”.

“I don’t think there is a single person in the country who isn’t outraged by what happened. You can see that on the streets. The fact is, women’s safety and crime against women are serious issues in our country, and they might be issues in other countries as well,” Jaishankar said in Geneva.
The EAM also invoked PM Modi’s speech from Independence day on women’s safety. “I’m reminded of something Prime Minister Modi once said from the Red Fort. He said all of us we say things to our daughters when they go out late at night, but do we do the same with our sons?… Ensuring the safety and security of women is a big issue.”
The EAM also refrained from speaking about politics linked to the issue on foreign soil, saying “I don’t want to go anything political on the issue outside the country.”
EAM Jaishankar made these comments while addressing the Indian diaspora in Geneva. He arrived in Switzerland on Thursday, concluding his three-nation tour, which also included visits to Germany and Saudi Arabia.
