NEW DELHI: Nearly 11 stray dogs were found dead on the temple grounds in Ambalapuzha of Alappuzha district in Kerala on Tuesday.
The locals suspect that the dogs were poisoned to death, noting that they weren’t harmful, Malayalam daily Manorama reported.
No formal case has been registered so far.
“Some animal rights activists said they have sent a complaint to the station…but we are yet to receive it,” a police officer said.
The southern state has been dealing with the stray dog menace with dog bite cases having surged by more than 200% from 2013 to 2021.
Since 2014, the number of dog bite cases in Kerala has consistently exceeded 1,00,000 annually. The most significant rise occurred between 2020 and 2021, with cases jumping from 160,000 to 220,000. Officials from the animal husbandry department attribute this surge to a substantial increase in pet dog ownership during the Covid lockdown period.
