NEW DELHI: Tragedy befell Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras on Tuesday where over 50 people were killed in a stampede that occurred during a ‘satsang‘ (religious gathering).
In their initial response to the massive casualties, the police said overcrowding led to the stampede as was in a video being widely circulated on social media.
“The district administration is investigating the matter.The injured are being taken to the hospital, and people are still being recovered. A figure of nearly 50-60 deaths has been reported to me by the doctors,” said district magistrate (DM) Ashish Kumar.

Here’s what we know so far:
- In the stampede incident over 50 people were killed, most of them women.
- Local officials and emergency responders are on the scene, and a thorough investigation is under way to determine the circumstances leading to the tragic event.
- A team consisting of ADG Agra and Aligarh Commissioner has been constituted to enquire into the cause of the incident, an official source said.
- Victims, dead or unconscious, were brought to the Sikandara Rao Trauma Centre in trucks and other vehicles.
- The satsang was reportedly being held by Sakar Vishwa Hari Bhole Baba, formerly known as Saurabh Kumar.
- President Droupadi Murmu expressed her deepest condolences to those who lost their family member in the incident.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Lok Sabha condoled the loss of many lives in UP‘s Hathras, said victims will be provided all help.
- Chief minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences to the families of those killed in the stampede. He instructed officials to reach the accident site and carry out relief measures.
- CM Yogi has announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh ex gratia for the families of the dead and Rs 50,000 each for the injured.
- Amid the relief efforts, PM Modi has spoken to the chief minister.
