Sonia Gandhi was joined by senior Congress leaders P Chidambaram, Jairam Ramesh, Ajay Maken, and other party members, all of whom gathered to offer their condolences and pay their respects to Yechury. “He was a dear friend… He used to mesmerise the Parliament with his interventions,” said Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal, reflecting on Yechury’s impact on Indian politics. “All politicians only think about themselves, dream of only power and position, but people like Sitaram Yechury gave their lives for others.”
Former Prime Minister of Nepal Madhav Kumar Nepal also paid homage to Comrade Sitaram Yechury.
Leaders from various political parties, including NCP chief Sharad Pawar, were also present to honour Yechury’s legacy. DMK MP Kanimozhi, speaking at the event, said, “I am here on behalf of my party and also on a personal level to pay my respects to a very important and great leader of this country. His loss is not just a political one. He was a thinker, a writer, a philosopher, and also a great inspiration to the next generation of politicians.”
CPI(M) leaders and workers gathered in large numbers to pay tribute to their General Secretary. “He (Sitaram Yechury) was a great inspiration for us. Whenever we faced any problem, political, ideological or organisational, he always stood by us. He was the loudest voice in the country in defence of democracy, secularism and unity of the country,” said CPI(M) leader Hannan Mollah.
Senior Aam Aadmi Party leader Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh also paid tribute to Yechury at AKG Bhavan.
Yechury is survived by his wife Seema Chishti and his two children Akhila and Danish. His elder son, Ashish Yechury, passed away due to covid in 2021. Yechury was earlier married to Indrani Mazumdar.
