RAIPUR: A standup comedy organised at the Indian Institute of Technology – Bhilai in Chhattisgarh turned embarrassing for the organisers as the comedian uttered slangs and expletives in Hindi leaving the students, staff members and visitors shocked. So much so that after some time the organising committee had to intervene and ask Rathi to get off the stage.
The video of Yash Rathi’s standup comedy went viral on social media where he’s seen addressing the audience and using vulgar language leaving the guests/ professors covering their ears with hands to avoid embarrassment.
A few minutes later, a member of the organizing committee went up to the stage and spoke to Rathi, asking him to end his performance and get off the stage. The incident took place on Nov 15 during the annual fest ‘Mirage’ IIT-Bhilai’s organized by council of students’ affair, that had parents, family members, professors and other guests.
The matter snowballed in a controversy after a video of the event went viral over social media and the political youth wings of BJP and Congress – the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, National Students’ Union of India, Karni Sena and nearly half a dozen such outfits lodged complaints with the IIT management and police.
Speaking to TOI, Durg district SP Jitendra Shukla said that several outfits have objected to the script and language used by Yash Rathi in public during the IIT Bhilai annual fest. “We are probing the matter as of now and police will then lodge an FIR on charges of serving vulgarity at a show. The IIT, Bhilai management has also written a letter to SP informing that they immediately stopped Rathi’s performance when he started using expletives,” SP Shukla said.
In ’23 Doon cops ‘ve booked Rathi
Since the event was organized by a student committee, the IIT Bhilai director Rajiv Prakash has ordered a probe and constituted a committee of three professors to check who was responsible for inviting Rathi and on what basis. The director expressed concern over the incident tarnishing the image of the IIT- Bhilai.
Rathi started in English and switched to Hindi going from usage of slang to sexual comments. Audience said it was embarrassing for everyone as there were kids and girls along with their families. Many started walking out when Rathi spoke vulgarly.
Earlier in 2023, Rathi was booked by Dehradun police for his objectionable remarks on Lord Ram during a show. tnn
