CHENNAI: Nearly 120 Samsung Electronics employees were detained by the Tamil Nadu police on Monday for attempting to march to the district collector’s office in Kanchipuram, near Chennai, to demand union recognition, wage revision talks and better working hours. Workers at the company’s Sunguvarchatram plant have formed the Samsung India Employees Union and tried to march to the collectorate to press their demands.Police said they were detained because the march did not have permission.
Around 120 protesters detained at three marriage halls in Kancheepuram were let off in the evening, the police said. Samsung workers are on strike for more than a week for various demands and holding demonstrations near the plant. Samsung declined to respond to queries from TOI.
