In a recent interview with entrepreneur Nikhil Kamath on his YouTube channel, Ranbir Kapoor shared that, despite coming from a privileged background, he did not receive extra money while studying abroad.He also mentioned that his father took away his car upon his return to India to keep him grounded. When questioned about his father’s intentions, Ranbir described him as a short-tempered yet good man who loved his family, work, food, and alcohol, and was open about his thoughts.
Ranbir revealed his fear of his father, admitting that he never actually saw his father’s eyes, always bowing down and agreeing to everything he said due to his intimidation. He clarified that, unlike his character in Animal, who is obsessed with his father, he was genuinely frightened of his dad. Although his father never physically abused them or raised his voice, his volatile temperament made Ranbir anxious.

The ‘Animal’ star reflected on dealing with his parents’ troubled relationship alone, as his sister had moved away for studies. He explained that any loud noise disturbs him due to this past. Growing up in a bungalow, he spent much of his childhood on the staircases, listening to their arguments, which left him feeling scared and constantly on edge.
He added that during their rough patch, with his sister away, he felt a sense of responsibility. While his mother shared her feelings with him, his father was less expressive, leaving him unable to understand or hear his father’s perspective.
The Kapoor scion revealed that his parents eventually reconciled and grew closer when Rishi was diagnosed with cancer. He observed his mother’s selfless care for his father, a level of love he hadn’t imagined at the time.
When asked if his father’s era influenced his behavior, Ranbir noted that men from that generation often struggled with vulnerability. He mentioned that his father never openly expressed love, rarely held his hand, and while he did hug him, it felt more like a pat. Ranbir acknowledged that this might be attributed to his father’s generation, though he recognized the emotional distance despite his father’s care and love.
Rishi Kapoor expressed regret over not having a closer bond with Ranbir in his autobiography Khullam Khulla: Rishi Kapoor Uncensored. He compared their distance to the one he experienced with his own father, feeling that he missed out on being a friend to his son. Rishi also explained that his strictness was rooted in his upbringing, which shaped his perception of fatherhood.
Ranbir Kapoor is currently married to Alia Bhatt. The couple welcomed their daughter, Raha, in 2022.
