NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has sought a detailed report from the Allahabad high court following reports of a controversial speech delivered by Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav, a sitting judge at the high court.
The speech, made during an event organized by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), included contentious remarks.
At the event, Justice Yadav had expressed support for the proposed UCC, highlighting its potential to “promote social harmony, gender equality, and secularism by eliminating unequal legal systems based on different religions and communities.”

Speaking at the event, Justice Yadav had said, “The aim [of the UCC] is to replace various personal laws that currently govern personal matters within different religious communities, ensuring uniformity of laws not only between communities but within a community.”
VHP said Monday that its legal cell was “setting the tone for UCC, Waqf Board (Amendment) Bill, and freeing temples from govt control” by engaging with legal fraternity in all states.
This is not the first time Justice Yadav’s statements have sparked debate. In September 2021, he advocated for declaring the cow India’s national animal during a hearing on a case related to cow slaughter. “When culture and faith are hurt, the country becomes weak,” he said at the time.
