NEW DELHI: The Congress on Thursday welcomed President Draupadi Murmu‘s remarks on safety of women but urged the President to voice the nation’s outrage across all regions and states, rather than just one.
“I welcome this statement and this intervention by the President. The entire country is outraged. But the country’s outrage is not just about Kolkata incident, but they are also about Farrukhabad, Kolhapur, Badlapur, Pune, Ratnagiri, Jodhpur, Katni, there are so many instances,” Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera told news agency PTI.
“The President would do well in representing and articulating the outrage of the country felt for across the country and not just one region or state,” he added.
On Wednesday, President Droupadi Murmu for the first time publicly spoken about her views on the rape-murder of trainee doctor in Kolkata through an article titled “Women’s Safety: Enough is Enough.” President Murmu called for the need to address the harmful mindset that views women as less capable and intelligent, which often leads to their objectification and victimization.
Khera, in response to the President’s remarks, stressed the importance of the President addressing incidents of violence against women across the country, not just in one particular region or state.
“The President should also ensure that she talks not just about one incident, she talks about other incidents also and gets equally outraged about Farrukhabad where 2 Dalit girls where found hanging on the day of Janmashtami, she should talk about Maharashtra where everyday you are hearing reports – whether it’s Badlapur or Ratnagiri or Pune or Kolhapur. All these incidents have also shaken the country; Jodhpur yesterday. So, the President should ideally intervene and talk about all these ghastly incidents,” Khera told ANI.
