In a social media post, the studio announced that the next film is “not too far, far away”. After a 14-year wait since the release of ‘Shrek Forever After’, fans of the series can expect ‘Shrek 5‘ to arrive in cinemas on July 1, 2026.
In the announcement, the makers announced that three original cast members have been confirmed to reprise their iconic roles. These include Mike Myers as Shrek, Eddie Murphy as Donkey, and Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona.
Buzz about a fifth ‘Shrek’ film being in the works began last month, when Murphy hinted that the project was already in motion. Speaking to Collider, the actor revealed, “We started doing Shrek four or five months ago. I recorded the first act, and we’ll be doing it this year. We’ll finish it up.”
In the interview, Murphy also hinted that his character Donkey, would also be getting his own spinoff movie.
‘Shrek’, which was released back in 2001, won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature and grossed more than $488 million worldwide, the original film’s success paved the way for its sequels ‘Shrek 2’ (2004) and ‘Shrek the Third’ (2007). The fourth instalment, ‘Shrek Forever After’ was released in 2010.
The franchise also includes the spin-off ‘Puss in Boots‘ (2011), starring Antonio Banderas, and its sequel ‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’, which was Oscar-nominated and grossed $481M globally upon its December 2022 debut.
The ‘Shrek’ franchise, including its spin-offs, has collectively grossed $4 billion worldwide.
